I recently had an M1 helmet outer handed to me and the unit mark was a triangle...asked what it was we found out it was an airborne armour unit. I said at first "They didn't have those!" Then thought "Oh wait!"...the Chaffee... Small fast and air portable.
Hey, your back. You have a ton of catching up BAR.
Thanks...yes, I'm trying to wade through it all but I simply can't dredge up old threads so I guess they become a read only and we go from here...
Don't forget about the Sheridans. Also Airborne Armor. We called 'em "tread heads".
A number of these dinky tanks were delivered by air to the ill-fated garrison at Dien Bien Phu.
Given the limited capacity of most of the aircraft involved, the tanks were partially disassembled in Hanoi and transported in "chunks", to be re-assembled just off the airstrip at Dien Bien Phu.
Their remains can be seen scattered around parts of the battlefield to this day, not necessarily in the position where they were disabled in 1954. Some are in better condition than others, ditto some rather shabby 155mm and 8" guns.
The story can be found here.
