Broken stock.

The fore stock on my matched Gew98 broke under the barrel band. There just isn't a whole lot of wood in this area with the cleaning rod bore, nut and band spring mortise.

To correct this I bored a 0.625" hole into each piece of the stock to accept a dowel. The bore doesn't perforate the out surface in any locations. Initially I was gong to use a wooden dowel but felt there would be too little material left after boring and mortising to make a strong repair.

I opted to machine an aluminum dowel in this application. I left the surface of the dowel with sufficient 'tooth' to attain a good bond with the epoxy. The ends of the stock were soaked in acetone prior to epoxying to remove and oils that could hamper bonding. After bonding the stock with Acra-glass I machined the mortise for the cleaning rod nut.

200 rounds later it shows no signs of failing.

That must have been a "Duffle cut" at one time? Most radical one I've seen though. I guess you've done it right but I'd have used wood still in the repair, we've several threads here about this repair...obviously yours works though. Not like it's going to have to go back to war anyway. Well done, nice rifle...

No duffel cut on this one. Just a failure of nearly 100 year old wood in the weakest part of the stock. It was intact when I bought the rifle...barely. You can see the lighter colored wood that was the last bit holding on before it failed completely. I chose aluminum over wood for the added strength as the cleaning rod nut mortise leaves very little of the dowel intact. The dowel is 5/8"D and the nut is 10mm (3/8") leaving only a 1/16" on either side. The repair is invisible unless the nut is removed.

Besides, I tend to not do things in a traditional way.
