I have what I believe is a Spanish Model 1944. The only markings are the serial numbers on the bolt, trigger guard (non-matching) and receiver. It does not look like anything has been ground off. I think it is a Spanish M-44 due to the "EA" serial number prefix. The only references that I can find say that it was made for the Moroccan police in the 1950's. Do I have something valuable or is it a candidate for a sporter conversion?
From the looks of what you have there is a Polish Wz. 29 which was sent to Spain for the Spanish Civil War. After the war many of them were converted to M44 pattern by the Spanish (renumbering, mixing up parts etc.). The EA marking in the serial number stands for the 'Ejercito del Aire' or Air Force in English.
So basically this is a former Wz. 29 which was made into a M44 by the Spanish for there Airforce.
I am not sure what the value is, they don't seem to command that much in Canada (maybe 350-450$ in Canada), but to answer your question about a sporter conversion, NO MILSURP is a good candidate for a sporter conversion anymore.
Nice rifle. Ditto ELs opinion in post#2 no milsurp is a canidate for sporteriztion today. Sporterized milsurps are a dime a dozen but original rifles get more rare with each passing day.
