'03 Mark 1 Questions

While visiting the in-laws this weekend we started talking about military firearms. I have a very small collection, so that seems to make me the "expert" in the family. This time my father-in-law said he wanted to show me his dad's "30.06 rifle". I was expecting some kind of hunting rifle when he handed me this Springfield. Needless to say I was surprised.

I know from a cursory look through the forum here and Google, that the action at least was/is a '03 Mark 1. Beyond that I have no idea if anything is original. Reading through the posts here it seems to be a hit or miss on original parts, but I figured that you all would be able to provide much more information than I could figure out.

The stock is the thing that stands out to me as non-original, or at least refinished. I couldn't find any markings on it. This is just idle speculation though. I really have no clue about Springfields.

The pics would be so much better if you used a darker background, like neutral. Less flash, more natural light. It's hard to judge the finish like this. Yes, a mark 1...probably the original barrel...finish looks worn...

Sorry about the poor quality. They were taken in a hurry. I can see if he could get some others.

Don't get me wrong, they aren't poor, just burned out a bit. Use more natural light if possible and a grey type of background...tan maybe...

The stock is not a Mk1 stock and the bolt looks like a WWII replacement bolt. But the receiver has the correct barrel and everything looks decent to me. Nice find, deep in a safe.

As my friend John Beard would say, "Overhauled and reassembled from mixed parts". Only the barreled receiver is original (and that refinished).
