Mountain ski boots?
Wondering what people know about these? They appear to be old world all leather uppers including the lining, as well as welter vibram soles. I've seen mention of insulated toe box but it certainly doesn't seem like it is.
They look and feel very sturdy. Like you could rely on them for any years. Brand new they seem decently not painful but I would expect some break in time is required.
Just picked up some alleged surplus boots, but I can't find any indication of maker. They are stamped with
"13 8 77026
4045 390 1"
On The inside. The box us labeled with
"Dla100-90-c-4045"
11/89.
So I'm guessing who ever made them, it was in November 1989. Just want to make sure they don't end up being rothco repos or something.

Pics would be priceless, I understand not wanting Rothco, I worked for a surplus store and we dealt lots of their crap. Give us a look at these?

Worn them most of the day today after letting them set last night with Obenaufs leather oil- which did not seem to penetrate the surface finish. They are a comfy roomy fit allowing me to wear my heaviest wool socks and overall they were fine today. Finally developed a hot spot on one heel after a 2 mile dog walk but thats hardly surprising with a new pair of all leather boots. One thing that leads me to believe these are legit is the actual Vibram soles.

Those are very recent boots, not to take away from them. Jan '89 is correct. I can't find anything definitive using the FSN or NSN or the DLA contract number. I think they're US issue and correct. Looks like something I'd have a go with.

Contract DLA100-C-90-4045 was opened in October 1989 (fiscal year 1990) contractor Walker Shoe Co., 414 E. Dixie Dr., Asheboro, NC, for "Men's Footwear, Except Athletic" estimated completion date April 1991, for $1,549,000, an additional payment of $168,000 was paid on this contract, reason not given but probably additional cost of materials or change in specification during the course of the contract.

Walker shoes, eh? Never heard of them. Sounds like its legit though, so I'm excited to get them broken in and give it a try.
Now, to decide whether to sand the outsole round at the toe or leave it squared for whatever bindings these are supposed to work with... Would be nice to pick up x-county skiing or something but ya know...
-
I wouldn't use them for X country...there's proper stuff for that. I'd use them for what they are, super leather boots. Don't mess with the toes, they'll round out themselves. Just wear and break them in. Enjoy.

Any idea if these are oil tanned or dry tanned leather like the ICWB? Trying to decide which leather product to care with.

Again, don't worry until they need it. You said the stuff you used didn't penetrate, because they're new. I don't know which process is in place with them. Once you get them completely soaked and wear them a bit they'll take whatever you use.
