Mystery Bayonet
I have owned this mystery bayonet for a long time but have never managed to positively identified exactly what it is intended to fit. I thought that it may have been a Mauser variation bayonet but it doesn't appear to be the standard Mauser fitting because the bar slot is too short, see picture, please. I did also wonder if it could be intended to fit a Axis SMG of WW2 (Austrian?) but this is little more than speculation on my part. There is some very feint markings on the blade but I can't fully make this out. The last 2 letters of the first word look like ****ON & Co. There looks like that there could be a "S" as the first or second letter of the first word.
Thanks for any help in identifying this bayonet.

Can't quite tell but it looks like it has the rounded channel for the cleaning rod which would confirm it as a mauser type. Looks to be in good condition but likely refinished as they ground most of the manufacturers name off. Diameter of the muzzle ring could be helpful also. Is it normal size or larger?

It looks like the normal size muzzle ring for Mauser of around 16mm but the slot is shorter than on a standard Mauser bayonet fitting. Yes looks like it could have been refurbished.

The words are probably Simpson & Co and I guess its for a Portuguese Mauser-Vergueiro M1904/39 (IIRC)...... these were originally 6.5 then converted to 7.92mm, the bolt can be a complete headache ..... lovely rifles and outstanding quality and finish. Sold mine to a mate but still have the bayonet.

1904/39 Portuguese Mauser...I think...
-
Big duke and BAR are correct. its for a Portugese Verguiero.

Ok thanks for the information chaps. The only thing stopping it fitting onto a K98 is the shorter bayonet bar slot so the Portuguese variation of the Mauser sounds right.
-
Forgot to mention, The number on the bayonet is the rifle number it was issued with.....

The blade is too short to be one of those. The shorter ones were double edge. I wonder if it will fit though as well...
