Nice way to start a collection! I remember 42 years ago when as a young paperboy I bought my first K98. Got it from a gun shop/general store and my Dad had to sign the paperwork. Picked up a Lee Loader and a bunch of 8mm brass and learned to reload as well. I would sling that K98 and put an ammo can in my newspaper basket on my bike. Ride down to an old closed up rock quarry and defend Normandy. After joining the Army the K98 and several other to include a No 4 Mk I sat in a closet in my parents house. When the milsurps started pouring in during the late 80's the bug hit me again. When I retired I had amassed quite a collection. On the third level town house the bottom floor had about 200 long guns and half in pistols/revolvers. In 2003 I downsized and got rid of just about everything with the exception of a minty K98(my original one was sold years ago as my loving Brother shot WW2 ammo out of it and didn't clean the bore for 5 years), M1 Carbine, M1 Garand, Krag, Lebel and all of my UK long arms. Currently my collecting interest are only UK. My office rack I keep 20 of them to admire, shoot and show off. But enjoy those rifles! I also agree with Jim that Steyr stock is very pretty.
Awesome story bruce. Nobody I associate with understands why I love these "old pieces of junk". If only it was the old times and we could buy these things for $20!
