Nobody in Europe should EVER forget....... And it wasn't just once either!
What really gets to me is.................we were NEVER allowed to cross the channel and land on French soil in any marked vehicles or travel in uniform, still in force.
We had to travel to Esberg or Bussem harbours in Denmark so we could protect the northern German flank at Schlewig Hostein. Times when they wanted us to jump in for THEIR celebrations, but very rarely for battles that were fought on French soil during DDAY and before.
Never got a direct answer as to why that was..............any takers?
That is because of De Gaulle.
De Gaulle got his knickers in a knot in 1966 over something post-war with the UK and USA governments about NATO, pulled France out of NATO and kicked all foreign forces out of France. I remember it being in the news for what now seems to have been weeks.
Then too, De Gaulle had no love for Poms or Yanks anyway.
He sure did when he wanted men from those countries to lay down their lives to help get his country back for him though!! We probably molicoddled him too much in the British ways, with fish and chips etc whilst he never saw an angry man!!
It was more to do with the fact he saw France as a world power, and NATO was essentially the US dominated force. By leaving NATO it made France have a larger say in the world especially when it came to nuclear policy.
France is actually a pretty strong nation militarily, and one of the few that would be able to hold its own by itself in the event of a war, unlike the vast majority of NATO countries (you could even say the vast majority of countries period) which are very reliant on the USA for protection. Personally I respect that France had the audacity to refuse to be just another puppet under US control and paid to be able to protect themselves and their interests.
