My personal opinion is that no plugged M1C receiver , and especially one with the "SA-52" rebuild marking behind the rear sight, is a candidate for "restoration". The plugged M1C receiver is a collectible specimen in its own right and is respected as such by me. A restoration of the SA-52 plugged receiver could never be a legitimate M1C to me.
"Restoring" a plugged M1C receiver is akin to converting a street version '71 Dodge Challenger with a three-speed 318 motor into the R/T muscle car version. I know car collectors get super excited when this is done but the idea is beyond me.
I no longer chase the exotic variations of the M1 Garand such as the gas trap, sniper, or national match. Maybe collectors of the M1C approach these restorations with the same mind-set as car collectors chase the muscle cars in that these illegitimate versions will bring more money in the market.
Bob, thanks for posting this. I'll keep my eye out for the final sales price on this M1.
(Yes, at one time I did have such a '71 Challenger. The collectors wanted to convert to an R/T it and the young guys wanted to soup it up and put it on the race track!!!)
Well; since mine, which is an SA-52 marked rifle, was done by the senior NCO in charge of the DCM program at Anniston way back when before CMP came to fruition, I reckon I'm quite happy with it. I saw him at Knob Creek last October and he offered to buy it back!
Did you see the details just released on the Challenger "Demon"? 840 HP out of the box, 0-60 in 6.2 secs, and 9.65 Quarter Mile at 140 mph -- Good Lord!
