Newbie with Winchester ??

Hi, my first post and I'm very new to carbines. a while back I did a bit of trading and ended up with my first M-1, a Winchester ser#5,820,XXX. It is not import marked that I can find and appears to be all Winchester parts so I'm thinking is was not arsenal rebuilt. It has the original push button safety and no provision for a bayonet.
The story I got from the son of the man who owned it was that the owner was in fact a Korean War Vet but his son was not sure when or where his father got the carbine, only that he had owned it for as long as he could remember.
It is in very good condition and looks and shoots very well after I cleaned most of at least seventy years of built up crud out of it.
The down side is that at some point the receiver was drilled and taped for a side mount scope and part of the stock was carved out to clear the scope mount. We could not find any trace of the scope or mount among his fathers "gun stuff" so we are not sure who or when it might have been drilled.
I guess my question would be, how much does this hurt the value?
I'm not a collector but take a lot of pride in my guns and like them in new to very good condition. Would plugging the holes and repairing the stock be a good idea or should I just leave it alone and shoot it?

Jim, it sounds like you have a neat Winchester carbine, even with the drilled scope holes. As far as the drilling goes, yes it will hurt its ultimate collector value. Plugging the holes can be done in a few ways. If it were my carbine, I would repair them only if it really bothers you, which it sounds like it doesn't. Is there anyway to post some pictures of your 5.8 Winchester? Plenty of 5.7's are seen, but not many 5.8's are due to the numerical possibilities.

Might there be a AW stamp on the rear bevel of the receiver?
This AW stamp would be just forward of the recoil plate.

No AW stamp that I can find. Will take some photos. I think this may be most all original parts as near as I can tell but would the 2 rivet hand guard be correct?

Hand guard could be either: a shallow groove 2 or 4 rivet.
At 5,8 yours is in the latter part of a transitional period, where newer updated parts are/were becoming available.

I have WRA 5,811,227 with adj rear site, flat top bolt, 2 rivet shallow groove hand guard, type II barrel band (no lug for bayo).
My stock has a long barrel channel measuring just over 4", you normally see the barrel channel just over 3" in this range.

Hand guards:
There were 2 that came with 2 rivets.
Type I is early with a deep sighting groove.
Type II is next with a shallow sight groove. Thicker cause they cracked as Type I's.
Type III same as Type II, but with 4 rivets.

Question:
Is the push safety marked on either side with a SW or possibly "EW" ?
I tried zooming in and think I can see SW on the left side.
But could just be my screen and some wish full thinking :confused:

All looks correct for your serial range as best I can see.
I'll try to list your part types Monday.

For now, look at this picture of your type II barrel band. See the position of the weld spots on either side of the bottom screw threads?
This is how you can tell your band is authentic WRA. These often sell for over $200.

That's a original C tip sling. In good condition I've seen them sell for $150.
Look for a marking on the bottom of your oiler. IS marked is the most common.

Look again at the Hand guard marking. Have never heard of one marked M-H, could be M-U, which would not be Winchester,but made for Underwood,

I can't see that the push safety is marked on ether side. Some light machine marks that I thought were letters at first but with better light, I don't think so. I cleaned it up a bit more and added some more photos to my Gallery. Also added a photo of the hand guard. Not sure what the second letter is. Could be an H or a U. Oiler is marked IS.
Thank you for the information. I was disappointed when I first saw this carbine because of the holes drilled in the receiver but after shooting it Sunday I am very happy with my trade deal.
I have a Garand that I have shot a lot but this is the first carbine I have ever shot. I think I may have a new addiction.

It sure looks like a M-U to me.
That would be a made for Underwood hand guard.
Gotta say it sure looks good on that stock.

Try this for bringing your pictures over from your album.
When you find a picture from the list (bottom ones) you'll see a IMG code.
High lite it with a left click,
then right click and copy it.
