Unusual K98 Carbine
I'm hoping someone can help identify a rifle based on a description. I saw this rifle at a gun show today and unfortunately was unable to take any pictures.
It was a carbine length Mauser rifle, stamped "K98" on the side of the receiver and it had no other visible markings on the receiver above the wood apart from the serial number. It did not appear to be refinished,, however the bolt may have been chromed. The bolt handle was bent and there was a cutout in the stock for it, in addition the bottom of the bolt handle appeared to have been milled flat and given a checking like pattern which may not be original.
The barrel had a bayonet mounting lug that went almost all the way up to the muzzle and the stock had a collar that attached to the barrel with a hinge in it. It also had a L shaped stacking swivel that projected foreword from the forend.
The sights appeared unusual in that they were the standard K98k type sights but the rear was marked on both the top and bottom with ranges with the bottom ones going in the wrong direction.
It had full wood and had not been cut down, the bore was not eroded but has a bit dirty.
Any idea what this is and maybe what would be a good price for one? I know I am asking a hard question not having any pictures, but I hope my description was sufficient for someone to know what I'm talking about.

Sounds like it could be a KAR98. Look some images up of one of those and see if that's what it is. Hinged bayonet collar and flattened bolt knob sound like it anyway. Other things don't make sense. Could be an upgraded one, Spanish conversion, etc.

Having looked at some pictures from Google, it seems very similar to what is referred to as a Kar98AZ. Except that the rear sling attachment point was a milled depression further back in the stock with a crossbar rather than the through the stock method seen on the Kar98AZ and Kar98k.

What I suspect as I have one is that this is a Polish KAR98 that was scrubbed and sent to Spain for the Spanish Civil War. That would explain the crossbar sling attachment.

This is the one I have when I purchased it although it is actually a WZ29 in a KAR98 stock. Straight bolt rather than bent bolt. Mix of German and Polish parts, the stacking rod is German. Since swapped out with a German Kar98 that I restored.
I don't know what to tell you on the price. Pretty risky with no photos and it depends how much of it is there. Parts alone can be worth a good deal. Polish rifles also are valued highly although not as high as an original German KAR98 Safe to say it's probably in the $300-$500 range.

I think the sling modification on the buttstock is post WWII French but I could be wrong.

In my photos, no, it's an original Polish KAR98 Stock. That's how they were made.

K98 as opposed to kar98 suggests Polish manufacture. If the stacking hook is angled rather than curved, also Polish.
