Enfield No 4 (T) sniper questions

Hi,

I am currently looking at buying a No 4T.
The one in question has the T and TR marked in correct place along with the S on the cut-off block.
The scope mount bracket matches the rifle number but scope is a different number.
The stock wood has no numbers on apart from FTR painted on the butt stock, and a broad arrow in a circle. ( Canadian)?

My questions are:
*If it was an FTR would not it (FTR) be stamped on the receiver or at least a metal part?
*I believe its quite common to have a scope not the same number as the rifle?
* My main concern is the area on the L/H side of receiver which seems to be roughly patched with a metal or something? Why would this be done?

The "patch" is a repair of the sight bridge/charger guide; drilled out and re-welded. Not to worry, it's a common repair during FTR.

Depends, is the scopes No. on top of the Butt wrist or is that a different No. that does not match the scope the old scope No. should be barred out if so and the new one stamped on the wrist but so much can have happened too these old girls. Just level with the barred out serial on the left side socket there appears to be a crack in the butts wrist could be a gouge.

Single staking on the pad screws is cool some of ours have multiples think mine has 2-3 stakings though my T was used in the Pad trials when there were issues with the front pad screws working loose. Nice rifle.

Cheers, Ok so my wood has no H & H stamps or numbering what so ever. Just a large FTR painted on the L/H of butt. So, who would do this, would it of been a legit FTR. Here in Australia we would of stamped the action of the FTR date FTR and factory, such as Lithgow MA.

As I am not an amourer I cannot vouch for the butt being replaced but obviously it has Peter L or Bruce in Oz may be better positioned to inform you about the FTR process, obviously if the butt was replaced out side of the H&H factory then it will not have the S 51 stamp nor the scopes.

Sure got rebuilt somewhere. Rear sight, safety and forend are Canadian.

Many Q'\s but not a lot to answer you on! The FIRST thing is that you say the telescope number is different. Different to what? Clearly the woodwork has been badly fitted by someone outside the military judging from the pi55 poor fit of the butt in the butt socket. But bear in mind the Armourers would fit new woodwork all day if need be - but properly of course - so changed woodwork isn'tsomething to concern yourself about I say. And contrary to what the real experts will tell you, we didn't give two xxxx who made it or what colour it was so long as it matched pretty-well! As for the FTR on the butt,........ well let's bloody see it then! We won't know whether it's large, small, stencilled or whether it related to another rifle previously fitted to that butt!
After a FTR, the mark was usually engraved onto the body side. Limpet Mine is nearly correct in thread 2 in that the weld blob is a repair for a loose bridge charger guide but this was a Field workshop repair and not specifically a factory job. A trivial point I know but it doesn't necessarily indicate here that the rifle has been back to the factory

The two serial numbers seem to be a bit of a puzzle. U-37566? and N-37539. But there you go....., can't win them all

Yes, I thought the serial number thing strange. A U prefix number changed to an N. U would be consistent with 1945 production, whereas N is generally noted on 44 rifles. I wonder how it came to get changed? The fonts of both serials look remarkably similar......Perhaps even an at the factory job?

Could be someone's attempt to desporterize.
If no serials present on wood, and as Peter stated, poorly fit, someone slapped some replacement wood on a barreled action they found perhaps. (I am currently in the same process).

Unless the rifle is a ludicrous price, it looks pretty good!

The scope could very well be original to the rifle and the serial is missing from wood in the desporter or rebuild process.

I'd just be happy it's a legit T with proper bracket and legit mk3 scope. Those 3 items are the most important.

Does the bolt serial match?

Yes, at least it's a real one: I suppose it all comes down to the price. They're all worth having at the right price. I'll bet this one's not 20 dollars though! ;-)
