Hello all,
I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I just recently bought a 1946 Ischvesk Mosin Nagant. Everything is in nearly perfect condition except there isn't a cut out for the bayonet in the stock. This has created a little place that has rubbed off. It just doesn't make sense to me that the stock wouldn't have a cut out for the bayonet to rest in. Any help is good help. Thanks!
You should post some pictures. But it does indeed sound like you have an M44 in a M38 stock. Since your rifle was made in 1946 there should be a number stamped in the the butt of the stock under the metal buttplate IF its a M44 stock.
A while back I bought two M44s from one of those internet mail order places and had them delivered to my FFL. It was a typical Ukrainian refurb.
Anyway....
One of those rifles had an M38 stock, although it was clearly an M44. At the time I just figured that the Russians were just using up old stocks before moving on to their newer stocks. IIRC....it was dated 1945. At any rate, I didn't think much of it when I sold it off. And, I did point it out to the C&R guy that bought it from me.
BTW, I kept the other rifle. The one with the M44 stock.
I have a 44 Izhevsk in a modified M38 stock and the bayonet inletting is crude.
