Question for Peter L. regarding binocs and telescopes

Peter:

Did the 4T sniper chest contain both binocs and the telescope(scout,regiment/ signalling,etc.), or just one of the two?

If both, why would that be necessary?

Give it a day or two and the old thread that explains it all will be resurrected I'm sure. But if I understand i correctly, you want to know why the snipers were issued a x3 rifle telescope, x6 binos and a x20 spotting telescope. Simple. The binos are for general observation and if whoever spots something worth a closer look, he directs the other man with the spotting scope to have a deeper look. Assess the target and see what happens. The x20 telescope is not a useful general observation telescope. It's for detailed close-in work.

I can perhaps help to answer that and reinforce what Peter has said.
Both items were in the CES because, both items were deemed necessary to give a sniper a choice between a collapsible telescope with a decent magnification and also a pair of focusable binoculars as well, for what were deemed as, no more than 400m shots "generally" speaking in WW2.
I was lucky to have been issued with a faceveil, smock and Mils Compass as well, and lots of goodies that never saw the light of day, like the scope tin for instance.
