A buddy brought in a 1944 Longbranch Jungle Carbine conversion with a peculiar problem. I noticed the safety selector flops (not flips :-) back and forth with no effort. Upon closer examination, the selector screw is loose, but when I snug it up, the bolt won't open ven in the forward position. I'm thinking there is a small spacer that goes behind it missing. Anyone have any ideas?

Try taking it off completely and re do the cam on the safety sear it may not be screwed on enough. This can give a problem with safety sear not coming back far enough. The sear works on a cam on the safety selector arm. Sometimes these can be put on half a thread out. Sounds like it was taken off and not put back in correctly.

Fixed, YEA, I kept looking at the bolt lock, and it didn't look like the lock was moving out enough to release the bolt when the retaining screw was tight. Disassembled it and reassembled it several times, before it dawned on me the little helical gear that runs the bolt lock in and out could probably start in either of 2 180 degree spots on the safety lever. Unscrewed it and restarted it 180 off, ran it all the way down and then reassembled and WALA, works perfect with the mounting screw tight (you even get the clicks now for SAFE and FIRE. Locks tight on safe. Your solution was dead on. The bubba that he bought it from probably did this and just didn't bother to fix it as long as the loose screw worked, SOME PEOPLE ! The guy he bought it from told him it was .308, but since it's not stamped anywhere, I'm thinking it probably still .303. Advised he take it to a gunsmith and have them check before shooting. I love the "Jungle Carbines" even the conversions.
