ce Code JP Sauer & Son 98 Sniper, please forgive my lack of mauser knowledge, why is the nose cap different than the usual 98 nose cap, was this style a war-time expedient? Did they pull any old rifle of the assembly line to be made into a sniper rifle or were they hand built?

It looks very nice, however, I never saw that exact set-up of scope and mounts as well as the nose cap, very strange. You need someone who just collects German snipers to run this one by before investment. I have seen MANY snipers from all countries but not that configuration, F.W.I.W-SDH
Well, a CE44 (JP Sauer Und Sohn 1944 production) K98k should have stamped and welded barrel bands - just like the one pictured. They can be either blued or phosphated and in 1944 in a CE made gun they should be unmarked (ie, without serial numbers). The rear sight parts should all be marked only with "1". Basically only the bolt should be serialized to the rifle - possibly the stock but not all will be serial numbered that late in the war. The stock should be sanded smooth and may be stained or unstained. Trigger guard should be of the stamped variety, buttplate cupped.
the scope is definitely real. The mount is what gives me pause. Looks maybe too good compared to the condition and wear on the scope and rifle itself... but I'm not K98k sniper expert...

EDIT: Ok, just saw the part about the rifle being "restored". $5400 seems spendy for a put-together to me.
The reference to modern parts is interesting. Presumably this includes the scope mount; the safety is a part that has been reproduced, perhaps this is one of the modern parts. Offhand, I can't think of any other K98k parts that are modern. Definition of the term "restored" is important. I suppose the key question is when the rifle was assembled as a sniper.
For all we know, it's one of those Mitchell's Mausers abortions faked up from RC parts. I wouldn't touch a restored anything at that price. And at even 1/2 the price, I'd expect ALOT more info from the seller ;)
