I have a U.S. weapons depot over hall manual for the M1 garand. It has a accuracy and targeting specification target to make sure all is well for the M1 before it goes out the door. I was wondering if the 1903a3 has a simular method
Also wonder if the 1903a3 had a specified zero when set on 200 yards at X distance it should by Y inches above/below point of aim.
I do know that the GI targets used in training had a 10" black center and the course of instruction was 6:00 hold, so POI would have to be 5" high at 200yds. Haven't been into it for a while but targeting should be listed in Brophy's book, maybe in the Base Shop excerpt contained therein? I'll look when I get a few minutes.
Accuracy spec out of the factory was 5 shots in 3 inches @ 100 yards.
Dunlop in one of his books said the expected spec with M2 ball was 10 shots in 10 inches form a bench rest @ 200 yards. He seemed to indicate with this comment was that the rifle should do this or it was pulled and checked for what was wrong.
We had only a 100 yd rifle range. It was oriented perfectly with morning sun behind the shooter. I had developed some really good handloads using the 168gr Sierra International bullet and 48 gr of 4064 IMR powder. The Garand was shooting 5 shot groups the size of a US quarter. One day I brought my 2 groove barreled 03A3 which had an almost new barrel as the Garand. On that day, in those conditions using an SR-1 target the 2 groove shot quarter sized groups identical to the Garand. I did several groups so it wasn't an anomaly. Point being that even with the 2 groove, they are capable of amazing accuracy. I always wanted to put a C stock on it but never got around to it.

Approval for use of the 2 groove barrel was obtained because testing indicated that there was no advantage with the 4 groove over the 2. In fact the overwhelming majority of last two batches of 1903A4 orders came with 2 groove barrels. A lot of folks believe they were just a replacement, that is incorrect.Quote:
