The years following World War II brought labor troubles. A 1948 strike at the Waterloo plant resulted in the death of a striking union member and a riot. Iowa National Guard troops were called in to restore order. Holding firm, Rath management eventually outlasted the union in negotiations, but labor relations remained sour

It always amazes me that when riots happen the Police are often targeted by the unruly mobs quite viciously yet when the National Guard or heaven forbid the Regular army (If there is a difference) then the unruly people get the wind up as they probably correctly identified these guys will take no crap and have a different ROE than the Police quietness reigns when the troops drive in......
