If he is a D/G then he's a bit hampered not having an M-60 to assist the ground troops when did they fit the MG to the Huey's for support!
Mate, given his M14 rifle, the helicopters are UH1B or C models with un-subdued markings, that picture is very early on, possibly while the Yanks were still serving in an advisory capacity, and definitely before 1967. The Yanks were using H model Iroquois for troop carriers and the C models were relegated to a gunship role when I lobbed up in the middle of TET 1968. Everything they had flying was up-gunned and subdued by then.
The fact that it's the Cav should give us a early limit.
Bob
Bob, why do you think "it's the Cav"? The insignia on the door is not a 1st Cavalry patch.
Here's a thought. Anyone besides me think it might be a photo from a training exercise some where like Louisiana long before deployment circa 1964-65?
Reasoning: There is no magazine in the door gunner's rifle. The helicopters are lined up nice and neat on the paddy dikes. The helicopters have nose numbers similar to what one sees in flight training establishments.
