The other day I was shooting 168 grain Hornady Match ammo out of my M-1. I had one round with a pierced and flattened primer. The round grouped with the others and was not a flyer. My M-1 was clean and properly lubricated. The firing pin moves freely in the bolt without sticking. Could this be the result of a defective primer? A round with more powder? Possibly a temporary blockage of the barrels gas port? Subsequent rounds had normal primer indentations. Any ideas?
Sounds like a higher pressure to me. You'll never know. Without proper pressure testing you can't tell. Take it what it was, an anomaly and just move on. If you get more then change ammo and move on. Some ammo shouldn't be used in M1 rifles though because the pressures can be hard on the op rod and gas affected parts... You can also get a gas bleed off gas cylinder lock screw relief valve and then set up so it just cycles this rifle with this ammo and be gentle on your gass affected parts. It allows all the excess gasses out the front of the valve at the front.Quote:

Thanks for the reply. I am thinking it is an anomaly also. It's the first time I used this ammo. I usually shoot my reloads using 150 grain bullets and 43.7 grains H4895. I am sure this is a lot milder than the round I mentioned. I had it laying around for quite a while and decided to use it up. And yes, I have an adjustable gas plug for those times that I use factory ammo, it works great...I learned about them here at this sight.
FWIW there is no dash in M1.

Do I detect a touch of sarcasm? :) Here's another free one: that little thing at the front of the gas cylinder is not the "gas plug," that term is reserved for the Gas Trap muzzle piece. The modern one is the gas cylinder lock screw.
Yes, I did use wrong terminology when I wrote 'gas plug', what's worse is that I know better. Yes, you detected sarcasm...I felt I was returning sarcasm for sarcasm...never a good idea in the long run at a site dedicated to a mutual interest. Then again maybe your M1 does not have a gas plug but my M-1 does?:yikes:
