Krag Scout Mount

In another post on down here, I had posted about using a Miller Kodiak Mount to put a scope on my Krag. Since then I found a fellow selling a scout mount on ebay that allows you to put a red dot or LER pistol scope on your Krag rifle. 2 of the 6 he had to sell arrived today, and I've attached some pictures. All you do is remove your rear sight and replace it with the mount he is making. For those of you shy on screws, he is even having the odd threaded Krag sight screws made to go with the mounts! It works with the 1901 handguard with no modifications needed, I haven't tried it with other handguards yet. He is also loading the Hornady 150gr BTSP @2300fps and selling them @$118/100rnds. The load appears to bust the myth that short bullets are not accurate in the Krag as he has shot a .45" 50 yard group with the load. I seen those mounts somewhere and wondered how they would stack up?

Sure will Chuck, hopefully the wind will be a little less than ferocious tomorrow and I can shoot some with it. I was surprised to find that his website is already up. The LER scope I have is a cheapy, but the sight pic is about as good as the boosted Alaskan. Certainly an aid to those of us whose eyesight isn't what it used to be. I prefer the looks of the Alaskan and will have a better front mounting point made for the dovetail and the LER will go on a sporterized 92/96 for my grandson. I get to fill the messed up hole I d&t'd in the barrel with steelbed now.

I just heard from Peter tonight, seems the website is up, but it will be about 8 weeks before he is ready to fill orders. In the meantime, I'll give this one a workout, Peter was a little concerned about the mass of the scope I have on here, only being held on by two screws. It looks big, but it's light (cheapo). I'll see if I can shake it loose or not.

Correct regarding the Kraghaus website. I tried to order via the web last night & had a notice that my payment couldn't be accepted. Got a phone call from Peter today & he explained that the website was launched prematurely and online orders couldn't be accepted until after April 1.
Peter indicated that he is also working on a round that has a .310 bullet for those oversized bores.
Maybe there's hope yet for my '98 that swallows a muzzle gage.

Thanks John. Don't know if a .310 bullet will help the 98 that swallows a muzzle gauge, what you're really checking with that tool is the bore diameter, the diameter land to land. What a lot of people refer to as bore diameter is really groove diameter. Unless you happen to have a star gauge, slugging is the only way to get that dimension. Peter mentioned trying to find some .310 123gr V-Max bullets, Grafs has some, and I've gotten good accuracy out of them, Peter believes they are old stock, he's well connected at Hornady and doesn't think they make them anymore, if you think you might be interested in trying some, best get them from Graf's before Peter snatches them up! I''m going to get up your way one of these days and shoot in one of the Krag matches you club has, honest!

I wish I had know about this before I traded my cut-down Sporter. It had a problem with the barrel indexing and very different points of aim using the peep compared to the tangent sight.

I will give this a look for my Norwegian sporter project though.

i have a sporter that the previous owner tried to do all the gunsmithing himself on
it has a cut down barrel (crown is a disaster), stock is cut down, missing the mag cut off but the barrel (other than the crown) and the action are good.
it has aftermarket sights on it that i am taking off, i am going to shave off the front sight and refinish it all.
i am thinking its a bad idea to give it a new tactical look but i am leaning in that direction. maybe i will do something more classy though.
anyway, i have the short mount that andiarisaka has in his photos and i am trying to figure out how to mout a scope with proper eye relief.
the short rail gives limited resources available to adjust the scope.

any suggestoins on mounting hardware and optic preference
i was leading towards a leupold or burris (most likely leupold because that is the brand i stuck to)

as for mounting, i was going to slap an A.R.M.S. #35qd ring platform and extra low rings for it on the picatinny scout rail from Kraghaus.
i do like the flexibility in mounting that the ARMS platform provides but my main problem is i dont want it to be too high for cheek weld.

from what i have envisioned, it will turn out pretty cool and not the complete heap that it is now.

Use the lightest scope you can find, and for sure use lok-tite on the screws. The scope pictured is very cheap, less than $30, near disposable. I got it off ebay, Chinese junk, but the eye relief is near perfect, it's a 3-7X. The end of the ocular bell is just behind the receiver ring. Though it's junk, it's light, and I've shot some awesome groups with it. Right now, I can't recall the name of the seller, and I'm not at home. Search, LER scope, or scout scope. Pistol scopes don't work too well, I bought a Bushnell 2-6X variable, and the eye relief on it was way out there, so now I have to buy a pistol. I see you don't like the tactical look, but an M-14 flashider looks pretty cool on a cutoff Krag, I bought one to put on one of mine someday. The lowest rings I could find were some vintage Bushnell, leaves the ocular bell about 1/8" above the receiver ring. Again, I'm not home, so don't know the number. They're not quick detachable, requires an allen wrench.

no, i do like the tactical look, i am just not sure how right that would look on a Krag rifle.
the gunsmith that i have talked to usually does tactical work and stuff for 3-gunners.
Because it is in bad shape and the whole thing needs a good refinishing, i am thinking of having a camo job done on it. He does neat looking camo jobs.

anyway, thanks for the info.
finding rings have really been a tough one. the closest things i have found was that ARMS system or some Weaver brand rings.
it really boils down to how much money i am wanting to put into it.
weaver looks better for the traditional look while the big beefy ARMS looks better for the tactical look

as for the M-14 flash hider, that is an idea i haven't thought of.
i cant cut down the barrel too much (short barrel) as i live in Illinois and they dont allow those things...
