This will have to do...Stock modification 1917

Still holding out for the right milsurp stock to come along.

So I recut the sporter stock with the high cheek riser. Now it is perfect for offhand and tripod shooting. Very comfortable and easy sight picture and natural point of aim.

A little bit of time with the power planer and belt sander did the trick.

I am waiting for the JB Weld to set around the trigger guard screw sleeves I installed (They were missing). Then I will finish sanding and apply a few coats of boiled linseed oil and reinstall the butt plate and swivels.

Some day I hope to find a proper stock at the right price. Seems that good stocks and all the parts go for nearly as much as compete rifles. I will keep looking.

It's one of those things where something ideal has little meaningful demand. Prior owner pretty much had to give it away to get rid if it. And I'm not about to scope either 1917 we have.

After one outing with it, the shape was clearly not going to work for me. So I exploited it's potential for works for me. Power planer and belt sander did the trick.

I guess if someone was all into putting a high cheek rise on a scoped 1917, such could be had from Richards Micro Fit Stocks.

Wish I had room and time for every pretty thing that comes along. If that were so I would have way more guns than I do!

When I get this stock finished it will look as good as when I started--and fit this shooter. I'm looking forward to it!

With all respect to Jim, I’ll have to side with you on this one GT.
I never could stand those super high cheek pieces on stocks like that. It screams opulence in none-too-flattering 1970s sort of way.
Maybe it’s simply because I don’t have scopes on any of my guns but I think this stock looks much better now.
If it were mine, I’d probably do a little work on that pistol grip flare too.

Nice work, GT. I’m following along with interest!

I hear you on that about the pistol grip flare. I think I will get it all buttoned up into the stock, install the butt plate, and then do some ergonomic assessment regarding that part. I have big hands so I may not want to cut that down much. We will see. Some shouldering and aiming will help me figure it out.

It is easy enough to shave a bit. But then I will lose the "Safari" look! Bottom line is I will go with what feels the best in hand.

That's a problem for sure with custom stuff, owners often try to sell for the whole cost and can't imagine why others don't see the same value they see...

How right you are. The most beautiful 1917 I ever saw was a custom shortened glassed job. Perfect in every way with amazing scroll work. Stunning wood! At least $2000 of gunsmith work. I bid on it on GB. $500. Went for a bit more. But not much.

GT, I think you have the right approach on this. Can you believe how much original 1917 stocks are selling for? I have found a couple of cut down stocks and added forends to them. They look pretty good and will do for now. Salt Flat

Yeah, stocks...mostly junk or sky high.

So in keeping with the trail of fortuitous happenstance that put this whole project into my hands for little or nothing...I am certain that someday the right stock at the right price will show up! Just to keep with the story line.

Very nice work. You did a great job with what you had and maybe just leave it.

The SK scope adapter works well without changing anything on the gun.

You really should consider giving up the stock or bite the bullet. Or even buy a gun that has the right stock if that is the main goal.

They are getting scarcer and scarcer. I have a couple of R stocks I am hanging onto. New un-issued, I expect I will get $450 or better when I sell them. One came off a gun that was not authentic (sold the bare action) and one I got early on for a decent price.
