I have a stock that is odd, It has the Cutout for the MKI Pederson Device on the Left, but has been cut down and converted into a stock for the 1922 , M2 .22 cal. training rifle. I was wondering if the military converted the stocks from the Perderson MK I to the 1922 , M2. I would greatly appreciate your help on this.
What are the indicators that it was for the M2?
As Lyman type rear sights were fairly common, more likely it was cut down for use with a sporterized M1903. Did you take it off a M1922 .22?
Well, it is the same size length wise as an M2, It has the cuts that "APPEAR" to be genuine and aged as compared to the rest of the finish. I did not take this off of a rifle, I purchased around a thousand stocks and this was in the batch. It just threw me off because of the cuts, and was wondering if any known MK I Rifle stocks were cut down or if this one is just a "Sportarized" version. Thank you for your replies.
I have been studying and collecting the 1922 series Springfield rifles for more than 25 years. I have never heard of using the cut down 1903 stock for an M2. In my opinion it is an aftermarket
modification to turn an issue 1903 into a hunting or sporting rifle. The shape of fiberglass bedding in the barrel channel (No room for the 1903 rear sight base) suggests the rifle was fitted with a '03-A3 barrel. The use of a 1922, 1922M1 or M2 stock to make a 1903 into a 1903 sporting rifle is fairly common. These are easy to recognize by the lack of stock reinforcing bolt which were not used on any of the 22 Cal. stocks.
My eyes or the picture may deceive me but that looks like a very early one bolt "S" stock. Go to VI's shooters page and look under rifles for "four rifles" and look at the third rifle down. It appears to have one stock bolt just forward of the bolt handle. Maybe some one with better eyes that I can examine this.
My error. After expanding the picture I believe I can see a second stock bolt.

The cut for the Mark I, if that is what is supposed to be, doesn't look legitimate.
