Don't recall seeing any pics with M3 SMG from the Pacific, the Marines are always pictured with the Thompson.
I don't think those are USMC, I just can't make out their div helmet marking...
May have been a tank crewman who lost his tank.
Could be US Army on Saipan or Okinawa.
