U marking on bolt head and knox form

All,

Quick question which I could not find the answer to via a forum search:

What does the "U" marking both on a bolt head and knox form signify?

Rifle in question is a 1918 RSAF Enfield SMLE that went through re-barreling in 1944 & then was sold out of service.

Is there an 'Arrow-head' inside the U ?

No there is not an arrow in the U (South African marking I believe). The photo from the auction site is enclosed below.

The only reference on the U I found was in The Broad Arrow By Skennerton Page 79 ~ U SMLE Bolthead = Metal composition specification
Then on Page 126 for Canadian markings for the one on the reinforce (if thats what that area is called) U relates to Canadian Officers Training Corps = University Club !!
Why it has been stamped on the barrel is unclear at this stage.

Actually the stamper of the serial was enthusiastic as can be seen in the flow of metal from the zero stamped on the receiver bulged the edge twards the muzzle.

The U on the reciever will be the serial number suffix

Agreed. And I think the U on the bolt head itself probably does indeed most likely relate to steel alloy composition.
