I have a late war Springfield M1 with a post war fattie Birch eyesore on it. I think I need a SA/NFR. But to make me enjoy the rifle more until I can find/afford a nice marked original, I want to drop it into a New Walnut stock.
I read a few years back when I was an M1 carbine collector, the there was a Boyds alternative. It was better suited to a WWII rifle being slimmer and oil stained to WWII specs. Does anyone here Recall this? any leads?

You may also wish to consider ordering a new stock and hand guard set from CMP, they are reported to be drop-in (or almost so), and are very reasonably priced. Check it out. Karl

I would go with Dean myself you will be able to drop your rifle right into his stock. CMP's stock you'll have to do a little fitting to it to make it right.
Thanks for the suggestions. I enjoy finishing an can do any fitting/inletting, so I am leaning towards the CMP's WW2 profile.
Anyone got an attractive, walnut, Non GI take-off they dont want???

I had an M1 with the same problem. I bought a usgi refinished stock from Numrich. It was quite a nice stock, of course the only sign of USGI ownership was a faind circle "P" on the pistol grip. The only problem was the rear hanguard was a Boyd's (I suspect anything you get from most folks new will be a Boyd's) but I was able to swap it for a USGI. I wound up with almost like new wood for just over $100.00 for the set. Unfortunately they are sold out of those but if you don't mind doing some refinishing they have some walnut "dent and ding" stocks for as little as $39.00. Buy the handguards from them as well and you might get some nice USGI wood for a reasonable price that may be quite pretty with a little elbow grease.
the CMP stock set is a good deal, very little fitting, some were none, and a tight fit = shoots well. most, not all, but most I have had were nice looking to me. good luck.

My new Winchester arrived from the CMP last week. It came with a brand new, beautiful CMP stock. It fits great, but maybe they had to do some fitting at the CMP. Looks like birch to me. Has great tiger stripning. As nice as the rifle is, I won't be keeping it. It's just not what was hoping for and I do have an earlier USGI Whinchester. I'll probably put it up on the classifieds next week.
Thougt you might want to see what one of their stocks looks like.

I'll have to put up some pictures of my new DGR stock when it arrives on Wednesday. My CMP service grade Springfield (Jan '43) came with a new birch set and while it looks nice, I am confident that Dean's slim walnut set will fit and look 10x better.
