Yes, French...WW2 type issue. The thing on the top sticking out is for a wooden handle. Section kit, about 5 L.

Here's the giant French mess tin next to a, normal/averaged, sized mess tin and this instance it's a West German mess tin, a bit like David and Goliath.
I have one and used it until recently as you can get two boil in the bag meals in them and enough water for a mug of tea afterwards.

That monster wouldn't be for the PBI. Even a section wouldn't carry something that big. Most likely a unit 'mess' thing. Chances are the thing is civilian 'camping' kit.
