M1 Garand Questions...

Having my first M1 Garand I have been looking and a lot of information and of course parts and such. I have what I am sure dumb questions but I'm hoping someone can't give me a curiosity fix;

1. How much shorter is a 7.62x54 stock then the 30-06 and is there a way to tell which is which without measuring?

2. I see Danish and Korean stocks online, what makes these different than US stocks?

3. I'm sure many of you shoot and have shot NRA/CMP Highpower and Palma with the M1 Garand. I have shot other rifles using both and have always favored the M1907 so I guess having never shot NRA/CMP Highpower and Palma I have to wonder. Did you have a sling preference between the M1907 leather and web slings?

4. Shooting NRA/CMP Highpower and Palma: I know it's speculative but, I have a good amount surplus 1976 M2 Ball is this sufficient for these matches, or should I go with Match Ammo? I could reload, but I'm not sure if I want to for this rifle like I do my bolt action rifles at least not at first.

1/2 inch shorter, Sarco was selling some they had lengthened to normal length.
Danish probably us unless beech wood, Korean maybe US or could be Chu wood.

Good place to contact for a GI stock, and a lot closer to you. You could transfer the metal from your existing stock.

I was just curious about the difference in these to US stocks, I have a stock lined up already from a member on this forum that should be a great replacement for the 'improved' highly sanded one that is on the rifle.

There is no 7.62x54 m-1. If you mean 7.62x51 then the stocks on the US conversions were standard M-1 stocks made out of walnut or birch. The only shorter stocks were the ones used on the Italian Typo 2 conversions.They were converted from standard stocks by shortening and reprofiling the front at the stock ferrule. Actual Danish manufactured stock were Beech although there are many standard Walnut and Birch stocks that made their way onto those rifles while in service from arsenal rebuilding. The Koreans made stocks using something called Chu wood although I’ve never handled one. The majority of Korean marked stocks are US walnut and birch that came off Korean returns. The Greeks also made some grossly oversized beech stocks as replacements for their rifles and the CMP had some made out of Hackberry. Just a short thumbnail of stock wood usage.

TWH thank you, yes I mean x51, mixed up my American and Russian. I've seen the Hackberry CMP stock, not very appealing. Thank you for the information on everything. So I'm guessing there is really no way to tell if the stock has been shortened until you compare or measure.
