The rifle looks like one of the Model 48 rifles the Yugos made for export to friendly socialist revolutionaries. These rifles were totally devoid of markings that would show the country of origin giving the Yugos "plausible deniability." Very very nice rifle Hugh, and one with a bit of cold war history

I did a bit of checking and the technical designation of the rifle is M48BO. The BO meaning "without markings." I think rare might be too strong a word but they are definately scarcer than the other M48 variations.

first one I have ever seen, so that makes it "rare" enough. The seller (very knowlegeable-who just bought 250 various Mausers including a Chinese copy of an FN 98 with bogus markings) said that there were around 1500 of these among all the Yugos imported. FOr 100 bucks more than a decent regularly marked Yugo, I got a very very nice one with a mint bore, I figure I did OK.:dancingbanana:

I purchased one of these right after one of the Arab/Isreal wars back in the 50's. All the ones the shop had, dozens, were without markings and there was no knowledge as to where they were made. They came from Isreal (war capture) and they said they were Czech made. These were the first Yugo M-48's imported and were unknown here.

Here are two mystery Mausers that are completely scrubbed but were of Czech origin and modified in Yugoslavia. I purchased the first one forty years ago and it's clearly a VZ24. I purchased the second one from Wholesale Guns & Ammo a year or two ago. They had it listed as an M-48 but when I saw the picture on their website I knew it wasn't and jumped on it for the $150 they were asking. It has the same "W" prefix as the one I purchased a long time ago. The second one was not a VZ24 but may have been a VZ23 though I'm not sure. Someone on Parallax Bill's site posted another scrubbed rifle in the "W" series fairly recently. Both rifles have excellent bores and I suspect replacement barrels. For what it's worth. Carl
