Colombian Mauser with Modern .30-06

I recently purchased a Colombian Mauser and I am looking for the right type of ammunition for my upcoming range session.

The rifle is a R.FAMAGE 1952 rechamber from 7mm Mauser to .30-06 from a FN Model 24 or 30 Mauser performed by the Colombian military. As such, the rifle has a large ring receiver. The previous owner said the rifle worked well with his surplus M1 Garand ammo. Knowing the surplus ammo is slightly less powerful than readily available modern .30-06 ammunition, is it safe to use modern .30-06 with this rifle?

Ultimately, I am fine with purchasing surplus ammo (or the modern ammo that mimics surplus ammo), but it would be nice to know if I don't need to limit my ammo selection. Nevertheless, I want to take good care of my Mauser!

It should be safe with normal 30-06. I’m tempted by one such rifle myself right now...

The easiest would be to check the loading of the ammunition it was rechambered for and compare it to the ammunition you want to shoot. In general, any current ammunition meeting the original specification would be suitable. I believe much of the commercial ammunition today is loaded down to prevent litigation.

American Eagle and a couple other companies manufacture 30.06 just for the M1 Garand. It is reportedly lighter and safer to shoot than other commercial 30.06 ammo. Hope that helps!

Modern 30/06 ammo is loaded to the same pressures the original WWII surplus ammo was . The only thing different about the ammo loaded for a M-1 Garand is the burning rate of the powder to work with that type of gas system .

So I've read up some more on the difference between standard 30-06 and M1 Garand spec 30-06. That reading combined with info in some of the posts above indicates the difference does not seem to be the chamber pressure, but the pressure at the M1 Garand's gas port further down the barrel. Thus, both types of 30-06 are subject to the SAAMI standard of 60,000 psi max chamber pressure. Is my understanding correct?

If this is the case, it seems I do not need to limit my ammo choice, as long as the round will safely chamber (depending on bullet weight). The chamber and bore have been checked out and there were no safety concerns.
