GALLANTRY MEDALS SOLD

Sad to see Taff Meredith having to sell his medals to pay for his retirement. I suppose if there is noone to leave them to, what use are they. He can get a repro set quite easily and nobody would know the difference.
Amazing collection which I believe did fetch the asking price of £120,000 on Thursday at auction.
Tough cookie and nice bloke, did not suffer fools gladly.

It is too bad Gil, these guys that we actually know and have served with now are having to sell there souvenirs and keep sakes...such a nice rack too, and so hard won. I'm guessing you know him well? It IS better that having someone pilfer them out of your estate for nothing while you lie cold on your kitchen floor waiting for evac after the massive coronary. I know of that exact thing happening by an individual here.

Those of us who have medals realise, after some time of not having the opportunity to wear them, that they mean something only to those who also have medals. And some time later, they just lie around in a box or drawer gathering dust. At that stage you realise they have to go to somebody who will appreciate them or they will be 'disposed of' after you pass away. After you pass away it doesn't matter to you what happens to them anymore, so decide early on how to handle their 'disposal' to the advantage of your family, regiment, museum, etc. In this case these medals will mean something to the buyer, even if only bragging rights, and more to the seller, who will be able to live better with the proceeds.
Parting with them is never easy, I worked damn hard for those I have, but right now they are of academic interest to most and sentimental value to my immediate family only. Mounted them in a display case for my son.

Good points there. Yes I know Taff Meredith very well. A tough Welshman who did not suffer fools gladly and a true recipient of the DCM in his circumstances at Goose Green.
He has always been a get up and go person and should have got a bigger honour at Wireless Ridge immediately after Goose Green but it was never written up.
We all assumed it was becuase he one in the bag already.
I am lucky my son still serves as a CSM, so he will get my medals.
I think in Taff's circumstances I don't blame him, we are getting no younger and if there are things to be done with that amount......brilliant, crack on!!

All he has to do now is spent a £100 and get a load of replacements court mounted and noone will even notice, as you say. Unless you have them, and served and understand each one and what it stands for................. its meaningless to the vast majority!!

Porbably like Canadians and American troops, due to the campaigns that have evolved in the last 30 years, men are leaving with 20+ medals. No blazer pocket in the world can withstand that weight :lol:

Mine are in a shadowbox as well. I don't take them out even for remembrance day.

Ours are leaving with an average of nine after decades of near nothing, at most three or four.

I have mine on a plastic made to measure backing that slips into your pocket for ease, It has descimated the breast pocket the sheer weight, it now looks like a breast. Why can't we have the Chinese plastic versions, now thats an idea!!!

The most common way for guys here too. Mine stay in the shadow box. My various berets too...hatbadges...
