I see one M1 carbine and one M1 Garand, but what's the bloke in the middle got?
Man in the middle, M1 carbine with grenade launcher.
photos show the M8 grenade launcher for the M1 carbine, there was an earlier model before this variation. Besides rifle grenades, alot of use for this M8 launcher was for smoke and pyrotechnics. Note the middle and man on far right have rifle grenades (or smoke ?) on the top of their packsAttachment 114618Attachment 114619

They had bags of trouble engineering the launcher in the beginning. Split stocks and broken tangs and pistol grips. It's all in the book...
