i bought this no1 lee enfield and the receiver is puzzling in that normally on the side of the receiver the holes are vertical but this receiver has just one hole like a no 4.
please advise

The 'single hole' is the standard for Indian made No1 MkIII*
The Indian one also has a variety of holes drilled thru the action (presumably for a scope mount)

Yes, home gunsmithing at it's best. The extra holes aren't meant to be there.
Yes, aside from the additional screw holes, presumably for a civvy scope mount, the rifle is 'normal' for it's manufacturer & the time when it was manufactured. There are various little variations in machining techniques that can be seen depending on where a rifle was made & when. The top of the receiver ring is also rounded on (most) Ishapore rifles, yet is flattened off on rifles of other manufacturers. Yours shows this phenomenon as well, but it's nothing wrong or 'bad'.......just a variation like the shape of the gas escape hole.

The 3 'joined up' hole Gas vent is only used on the Indian rifles.

The Indians have sold 1000's (maybe 10's of '000s) as surplus, the USA has an awful lot of them. Many have no doubt made it over the border into Canada.
