US Government Roll Marks
Just picked up a nice WWI 1911 from an estate that somewhere in its history an owner ground off the Property Of US Government roll mark. All other inspection markings are crisp & clear.
Does anyone know of a reputable 1911 smith that could restore the roll marks besides Turnbull?
Thanks

May I ask why not Turnbull?
He’s who I thought of by the time I got about halfway through your post haha.

You cannot restore the roll marks. If the Property of US Government has been removed it will never look correct if you try and remark it. Just leave as it is. The more you mess with it the worse off you will be.

I agree with above. Someone had to grind deep to remove marks. Leave it be.

Cogan's Accurate Plating in Alabama did my 1913 Colt. They can laser etch markings, while not the same as a roll mark, it looks good. They could not redo the inspector markings on the frame though.

I had a 1915 Colt 1911 that had the US Property and 1911 U.S. Army markings horribly defaced at some point. Basically gouged out with a file. Since it was a 10% finish pistol with the only replacement part being a WWII barrel, I opted for a Turnbull restoration for a client who just wanted a pristine example and was on board for the cost of restoration. Turnbulls did a lovely job.
