Photographer Joe Rosenthal, left, takes a break from work in March 1945, with Bob Campbell, a Marine from San Francisco, in front of a large Japanese gun knocked out by Marines at the base of Mt. Suribachi. Rosenthal scaled the mountain to take the picture of the U.S. flag being raised there.
