I have never seen a more dramatic picture of "hedge row country". Most pictures show soldiers up against and aiming through bushes. This shows the open death zones in the fields bordered by the hedge rowed sunken lanes. Imagine the killing zone being trapped in the lane. And the narrow opening from field to lane. A prepared defenders paradise.
Currahee! by Donald R. Burgett "Grenades were thrown over the hedges and grabbing roots, small trees and brush growing out of the side of the hedge, we pulled ourselves over the top. Some of these hedges were well over twelve feet tall. Then, sliding feet first, the troopers went down the other side to do hand-to-hand combat with the enemy."

Ordinary guys who were heroes... if you saw them at the supermarket you wouldn't notice. That's the hallmark of "citizen soldiers."
