What do I have here?
I stopped by a small museum today, one that I help out with when I can. They've been doing some major organizing and cleaning. They found this behind a pile of junk. I'm a milsurp firearms collector, and know nothing about swords, but figured people here do. At first glance, I thought it was a cheap reproduction. But, after a closer look, I believe it is actually a very old military saber. Can anyone tell me what I have and approximate value? I can get better pictures if needed. Thanks!

Is it an 1860 pattern US issue cavalry saber? Looks like it.

A Civil War (1863) sabre that just needs a touch of careful cleaning - no idea of value, but it's most certainly not junk!

Yes. A model 1860 Cavalry Saber. It's a C. Roby from West Chelmsford, Mass.
If the blade is not overly abused, it's a $5-800 piece. As you know, use extreme care cleaning it up. Leave the patina!!!

I had one years ago, traded a Japanese navy Katana for it. He got the better deal... But the blade was wonderful spring steel. Would have been an excellent working blade I think. They even look like a working sword.
