How Large is a Tokarev?

Please forgive the neophyte question. I haven't seen one around locally but have thought of ordering one of the Chinese Tokarevs. I recently bought a Walther P1 and have enjoyed it immensely.

The question for me is, how large is the Type 54's grip?

I have fairly large hands and if the gun is too small, I shoot terribly. I have had Smith and Wesson I and J frame revolvers and the grip sizes are too small, they were a tremendous disappointment. But 1911 with palm swell grips, Walther P1 and Glock 17 all fit my hands well.

Because of the length of the cartridge, the grip is fairly long, but the pistol is quite slender. I find that mine will bite the web of my thumb (hammer/tang) if I use a solid, high hold.
The Tokarev has a lot less bulk than, say, a 1911.

The Chinese is 9MM the others are 7,62x25. The length of the Tokarev's differ as well; the Yugo Zastava M57 version has a more extended grip because it can hold one more round than the other types. Because you have big hands and if you are not stuck on 9mm I would recommend you consider the Zastava.

You can also find after-market grips that may help.

Visit your local gunshops and especially any shop with second hand guns. They might/should have. Or collectors in your area. Or call the LGS and enquire if they have or know of anybody who has, even private individuals.
Then ask nicely to handle one.
I suspect the grip might fit you but the single stack 9mm/7,62 is flatter and longer than 1911 and Glock. Should fit.

I have a Yugoslav and a Romanian Tokarev. The Yugo is very similar to a 1911 in my opinion although it is lighter. The Romanian has a shorter grip as mentioned above. I can't say I have large hands, they aren't small either but I'm comfortable enough that the Yugo is under my desk top ready to go. I have three 1911 clones scattered around the rest of the house. If you're comfortable with a 1911, I think a Yugo Tokarev would work for you. It is not as large as a Walther P1 and I've never used a 1911 with swelled grips.

I check in with every shop within 50 miles I know of on occasion and but none have gotten one in the 2 years I've been interested in a Tokarev. We don't usually get old guns or unusual stuff around here. Local people just seem interested in new stuff so that's all anyone carries. The P1 was a rare exception. The gun shop employees would get excited when I got stuff off gunbroker because it would be something unusual. I mostly quit buying off there, though, about the time they brought out online sales tax.

Sounds like a Chinese Tokarev may not be a good fit for me. Will keep an eye out for a Yugoslav.

I haven't personally bought from any of these. The companies I bought from are all sold out. The Canadian one is likely out of bounds unless you live in Canada but the others are all US.

Actually, I'm mistaken, the ammoland link is to Brownells and that's who I purchased my Romanian pistol from. I was very pleased with what I got and they had the best price on those also.

You have to have an FFL that will take delivery of it and to the transfer for you but that generally isn't to difficult. I bought my Romanian online like this. Bought one other pistol this way also. I'm not a huge fan due to not being able to inspect it first but most of these surplus guns are all in roughly the same quality.

Well fellers, I went to another gun show with an eye out for one and instead ran into a gem I had almost forgotten existed. Picked up a Brazilian crested Smith and Wesson D.A.45. Barrel looks pretty clean. Lockup is tight. Original but worn finish. Fits the hand well enough, though maybe not quite as well as an SAA. Best thing about it is the trigger is OUTSTANDING for a double action. Looking forward to getting in the moon clips and taking it to the range. I had been missing a revolver since I sold my SAA clone.

My grandfather used to say not to force things, but that if they are meant to happen, they will. I wasn't meant to get a Tokarev (yet).
