I have a 43 Savage built No.4 that has a badly mismatched butt. Recently acquired one that was described as Savage built. On receiving it pretty sure it is South African. Can anyone tell me where it was made? No S in a box that I can see anywhere.

It is an Indian Marked (Inspectorate of Small Arms) Butt. It may also be a "Short" length butt (the "S" mark) - unless you have very short arms you may find that the LoP will be all wrong for you.
Thank you. I was guessing the S A with arrow between on the side of the stock was South African. Apparently wrong again. Yes butt is short, hard for me as I am taller with long arms. Don't enjoy my thumb whacking my nose at every shot.
Would have been a U with the arrow inside for the Union of SA.
For the short stock, a slip on boot works excellently to lengthen the stock without any alterations. Works well.
Those Savage Normal-length butts are out there somewhere. They still aren't scarce (here, at any rate).
