I have had this for years and could never find out what weapon this case is designed to carry. It will fit a WW1 BAR Model 1918, US M1917 Enfield or Springfield M1903.
Unless someone has an answer, I believe it is a general purpose rifle case for any weapon that fits into this caseAttachment 127882Attachment 127883Attachment 127884Attachment 127885
I've only ever seen replica cases like that, but they are reputed to be a copy of originals. There were several patterns, both military and civilian that were used...apparently.
The internet says it was designed for the 1903 but I'm sure it was used with the 1917 also as there were a lot more of them than 1903's. But there is no case designed for the 1917 it appears. The Garand case is different.
Early models had leather flaps like yours, later ones had continuation of the fabric.
I also have a mystery case. I have tried to fit everything I own and can borrow from the 1873-1945 era with no luck. The best fit was a krag long rifle. I have not tried a krag or trapdoor carbine, or a 1903. The P14 and garand don't fit well.
I'm reasonably certain it's military because of the suspiciously bayonet shaped pouch.

The stars denote letters I can't fully make out, and I make no promises that the ones I can are accurate. The city may be Kenosha, Kaukauna or Waukesha, assuming the Wis is Wisconsin

First thing that came to my mind when looking at your second photo is a fishing rod/tackle carrier. No idea if that's what it is but that's my guess.
Looks like a breakdown shotgun case. Like for a Winchester 1897 or Model 12.
The bayonet pouch would likely hold a wooden thread-together cleaning rod just right.

I never tried a breakdown in there. I can get a hold of a Remington Model 81.
I'm sure if could figure out how the quick connect works on that pachmayr, a Remington 81 would fit in the case, but the barrel would be short. I'm not sure if its brother the Browning A5 takes down, but I would assume the barrel would be long enough and that "bayonet/cleaning rod" pouch would fit the tube magazine.

Oooh, that case looks spiffy with that Remington.
Might have to track one down for my model 8.
I've got one of these (without the writing on it), I've had it for years. Cost about £1, I think. Used to have two, but sold one. I always understood it was for the BAR, but only the WW1 model without the bipod would have fitted.
