PFC Benjamin Franklin Strickland, Jr., called "Ben", entered the US Army on Nov.
19, 1942, at Camp Wolters, TX. His serial number was 34580863. His residence was
shown as Alpine, Talledega Co., AL. Ben was assigned to the 1st Infantry
Division ('Big Red One'), Company I , 16th Infantry Regiment. He would serve in
North Africa, Sicily, then Normandy and across France to Belgium, then to Aachen
(Siegfried Line in Germany), and would be killed in action at Gressenich,
Germany, on Nov. 17, 1944. The official cause of death was 'concussion'. He was
buried in the US Military Cemetery at Henri-Chapelle #1 in Belgium on Nov. 23,
1944. His body remained there until Aug. 12, 1947, when he was returned to the
USA.
