Norton supplied a lot of motorcycles to the British military in WWII. However, because of the steering damper knob and the speedometer shape and mount my best guess would be BSA M20. It had a 500cc long stroke side valve engine that produced good low end torque. Excellent machine, great picture.
I suppose the gun mount would have been practical if you were a former member of a motorcycle display/acrobatics team. ;)
Oh and look: Gen. Gough-Gough, the erstwhile GOC of the 5th Army of Kaiserschlact fame giving his considered opinions on battles!
Many an old sweat must have had a wry grin, or made some suitable expostulations :D at the thought of that!
