Enfield Barrel in 308
I am in the process of building an Enforcer "tribute" rifle and purchased the barrel, stock and extractor from the auction below. I received the parts today and I am very pleased. Here is a link to the auction:
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=124911608
I will save the forearm for a rainy day. I like it alot. It is a Sile Stock and is a very nicely made item. I will use the stock from my sacrificial rifle for the project.
I had a question for the group around the origins of the barrel.
It is 27 1/2 inches long and about 3/4 of an inch in diameter for the length of the barrel.
The only mark on the barrel is a "T 16" near the chamber. It is threaded and with the extractor cut out. It is short chambered.
Any idea who made the barrel?
I am still looking for a sacrificial #4 Mk 2 action. Mk 1 s are very available, but the Mk 2 s are tougher to find. I put a WTB on the boards with no responses so far. I am looking for a sporterized rifle so that I don't have to destroy a nice original one.
Thanks for the help,
Brian

Your barrel isn't the right configuration for an Enforcer. The barrel is a Mauser profile...see the step up just ahead of the threaded area. The handguard ring won't fit. I suspect that a Mauser barrel was turned down on the shank, threaded and extractor cut. Have you confirmed the thread? Should be 14TPI x .997" major diameter x .687" long. Do you know the # of grooves and barrel twist? Not being critical however I've got lots of experience with these.
Stile was an Italian maker for many British gunmakers like Parker Hale, London Arms, Churchill, so on. You have a typical target forend for a .900" heavy barrel.
You might be best staying with a target rifle build. If you want to go Enforcer get the correct parts and it will save you a lot of grief.

rgg,
Thanks for all of the information. I appreciate the advice and guidance.
I haven't checked the threads for size. The barrel is a 4 groove. Not sure about the twist.
I will try to find another barrel to start with. If the thread pitch is right, can I still use the barrel for a target type rifle without the handguard? I could build a second rifle and use the stock and forearm without a handguard.
I wonder if someone sold the items as a set years ago. I am still curious about the "T16" marking on the barrel. The marks were apparently applied after the barrel was turned down.
Any thoughts or advice on either the Enforcer or second target rifle build is greatly appreciated.

Uncertain what "T16" means.....profile number, inspection stamp, doubt it is of much significants.
On the Enforcer build.....start with a very good forend and cut it 1/2" ahead of the band. No8 top guard can be found at EFD in the UK that can be modified to suit the Enforcer. You need a Parker Hale sporter Butt and most likely will have to remove the checkering. All can be BLO finished and the result will be outstanding.
Pecar scopes are available.....you frequently see them on eBay...you need a 4x10 Var. Mounts are again Parker Hale ...front A20...rear A21...you need to remove the rear apperature from this. Rings are Parker Hale 26mm to match the scope. Sights are Parker Hale 5E.
Barrel most likely will have to be turned to configuration. You might find one in the UK however there are export restrictions, unless you're willing to lay out the cash, most viable route is to put a 6 groove 1 in 12 twist barrel on. You can shoot modern loads this way.
7.62 magazine is available, as is the extractor.
The easy part is the receiver and bolt. Any MKII in good condition with all the little bits will do the job.
I know of several successful builds....takes time to cummulate the parts...be patient...you will get there.

PS. Maybe Alan can post a pix or 2 of his build. He did a great job!

Ron,
Thank you for the additional information.
I have accumulated the scope, mounts and rear sight. I need the rings.
I have the top handguard, magazine, extractor.
I think the barrel and rings may be the biggest issue. Alan has sent me some excellent information and some pictures of his Enforcer build. He did a wonderful job with it.
Anyone have a spare barrel or rings laying around? Never hurts to ask.
Thanks Ron,
Brian

Rings you need are Parker Hale RAHS.4. These are 26mm and high to fit the Pecar 4x10. Send me an email rgg_7@hotmail.com. Ron

The hardest part to source is the Safety - the standard No4 is too long and wont go past the PH 5E sight. EFD (in the UK) is making some up and he tells me that he'll have the first batch within the next couple of months - not cheap - but then any 'hand made' speciality item is going to cost.
Currently got an L42 Butt but I have the Monte Carlo Butt as well.

Alan...do you know what EFD is selling the safety for? I've never seen an original for sale? Ron

He told me I had his last original. I had to wait for a few days for the shipping as he was using it to measure up to make drawings.
Drop him a PM or mail - I dont know prices.

Ron and Alan,
Thanks to you both for all of the information.
Alan, great build. Can't wait till I am that far along. Pulling the trigger the first time must have been very rewarding.
Any idea what barrel I could purchase to have turned down to shoot modern loads?
I will update as I make progress.
