Unidentified Leather Flight Helmet
I bought three flight helmets at an auction today. The first two are easy, A-9 USAAF summer helmets made of canvas with sheepskin ear pieces on the inside. Both well marked with tags.
This one however is a mystery. I checked various US military helmets and could not come up with a match. This one has snaps which seems uncommon on military models but they are CARRS snaps which were used on Marine Corps items at least in the prewar and WWII era. But they probably made snaps for a lot of products and over a long period of time.
So, it could be for the Navy or Marines rather than the USAAF. It could be civilian, it could be for another country. Seems well made and in decent shape minus the wear on the sheepskin chinstraps.
Seems to be sheepskin interior but possibly manmade. The interior shows some wear but I don't see any indication it was glued in. Not a single marking I can find.
