What's the bamboo on the gunshields for?

In fact you can still see the smoke wafting out from the muzzle so he may have eliminated the threat, he has the top cover open so I guess ready to feed in a new belt.
Wondered if it was something like that.; a larger diameter would helped that. A piece of split HD hose might be been better, but maybe the storesmen and mechanics weren't cooperative. ;)
