I'm thinkin' that one was burning for a while.

The lighting, focus and borders around the soldier suggest a faked shot to me.
Well spotted
Ya, I don't think so. Here's the original text... "A GI from the 12th Armored Division runs past a burned-out M4A3E2 assault tank of the 43rd Tank Battalion during the recapture of Herrlisheim in February"
What is getting me on this one is the length of the barrel. Here's a Sherman M4A1(76) with D82081 turret

and a M4A3E2 Jumbo for comparison:

"Suggests" is the key word. Given what seems to have occurred there a GI running back past the tank would not be an impossible scenario. However, there seems to no combat photography actually taken during the combat at Herrlisheim. Lots of photos taken afterwards of wrecked Shermans. So faked in a darkroom or faked by having a handy GI run past the tank?
