As we are not quite seeing the entire handguard yet can see his supporting hand how can you determine there is no magazine in the first weapon?

Because it looks like a Garand at first glance lol. Those 20 rounders are big and heavy when full. It looks like a parkerized box of ammo sticking down from the middle.
