I was hoping that someone could tell me what the disk means. Since I can't seem to post a photo the disk reads= "C G "in the center with the disk screw between them "1916" on top and "18" on the bottom. I will attempt to post a photo. Thanks ( The rifle is a Sht LE III 1912)
Im having a hard time getting any information on this. I have it posted on 2 other sites with no replies. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks
I know that someone on the other site has suggested "Coldstream Guards", but I have to say I think that is very unlikely: most Regimental butt disks of that era have a fairly consistent layout and font for the unit details - I feel sure that (especially) a Guards regiment would have had a neat inscription. The "CG" font is far larger than usual, and is more like the sort of thing a private owner or shooting club might apply to differentiate rifles on the club rack.
The problem with identifying butt disk markings is that there are a few hundred easily identifiable British & Commonwealth regimental or unit markings, and then literally thousands of other Empire Police/ Militia/ schools/ game warden/ maritime/ etc/ etc possibilities - plus an unknown number of private owners.
Agreed. And I would argue "Civil Guard" is FAR more likely given the non-standard marking pattern than Coldstream Guards ever would be.
A civilian owner's initials are equally likely.
Brian Dick (BDL Ltd) in SC has a little booklet that details all of the British identifying marks applicable to butt marking discs. I've got one and very good reading it is and cheap too!
