Is special (high temp rated?) grease need to lubricate the M1 Garand for shooting. I've got a PDF file showing the places to lube with "Rifle Grease" which I imagine back when the rifle was still in service was a government issue item. Can I use something from the auto parts store for this?

Just about any high-temperature bearing grease will work fine. Personally, I use a so-called "rifle grease" from the local sporting goods store. The classic "M1 grease" is, of course, "LubriPlate."

for the Garand use the moly-wheel bearing grease-would you put 1940's era oil in your car ??-I bought a pound can from auto part's store,,I use it for barrel threads for ar's-it's also dark and does not show on your rifle-my kids will not ever use all that I have left in that small can

I purchased a can of Lubiplate years ago and use it exclusivly on my M1s. It works great and I have never had a jam or any problem related to lube.
Hi-Pressure, Hi-temp wheel bearing grease. Got a can at Wally World for about $2 and it's waaaaaayyyy more than I could ever use in 5 lifetimes. Never had a functioning problem.

Militec-1 grease is currently my choice, although I have used Lubriplate 130-AA with good results. (Militec has donated a lot of their products to troops in the sandbox.)
Whatever you use, use just a LITTLE, or you will be wiping it off your glasses.
I use Lubripate 130A with good luck.
Military rifle grease was a NGLI-3 type grease. The military reverse engineered Lubriplate 130 and put the properties into a spec.
Basically any water proof wheel bearing grease will work fine.
Grease was meant for hot/wet environments.
In winter use a light oil, LSA, or in artic conditions, nothing.
