Got this from another forum and it works for a leather sling:
(1) Lay the gun on a flat surface, hammer (bolt) on top, muzzle to the RIGHT.
(2) Lay out the sling, parallel to the gun, FINISH side UP, claw to LEFT. Remove the brass “collar button” and set it aside (where you can find it).
(3) Put BOTH keepers well onto the sling, with their seams facing UP. The larger/thicker one goes on your LEFT, the smaller/thinner one on your RIGHT.
(4) With FINISH side of sling facing the stock, pass the claw end (going FROM the muzzle TOWARDS the butt) through the LOWER swivel (which is on the trigger guard for a TD, buttstock for Krag).
(5) Bring claw end around and pass it through the large keeper, but do NOT hook it.
(6) Pass the slotted (holes only) end of the sling through the upper band swivel (from butt towards muzzle) then around it and back through the small keeper.
(7) Thread the slotted end of the sling through the large keeper, BETWEEN the two layers already there.
(8) Continue to feed the slotted end through and back around the guard swivel, until brass collar-button can be inserted in the keyhole slits. That can be tricky on a dry, or stiff, sling - but it just takes a little effort. The 3” (or so) length will be towards the gun.
(9) Pull/work sling to be “snug”, but NOT strained, engaging claw in the “best” holes.
(10) You should now have, from left to right, a double wrap through the lower swivel, the large keeper holding 3 layers, the claw (on the outside), the small keeper holding 2 layers, and, last, a single wrap through the upper swivel. If you have followed instructions, the sling will present a fully “finished” appearance.
Hope this helps
Good info, now the next question;
With a period correct sling in place, has anyone used the sling in prone position? What is the easist way to undo the sling, make a loop & then reattatch the sling on the rifle in a 3 minute prep period?
Thanks mbarrad,
Great instructions. Gives a neat appearance. Not as functional or user friendly as the 1907.
+1 on John's question: How does one use it for the loop?
"How does one use it for the loop?"
1. Remove completely from rifle.
2. Install 1907 sling - which was actually designed for shooting.:slap:
Yep, the slings up thru the Krag were only intended to carry the rifle, not to steady it while firing.
